Spring Summer Top 10 must haves

Summer is here. And this means one thing- wardrobe makeover. And yes that means shopping! But before you hit the malls for the latest spring summer collections, make sure that you have the basic essentials of the season. Here are my top 10 must haves for spring summer 2011:

The Classic White Shirt

Although the white shirt is the basic staple for any season, anywhere in the world and for all ages, the charm, utility and chic-ness of a white shirt is unbeatable in summers. You can dress it up for a classy look. Or you can dress it down for a casual and easy look. There is nothing more practical and more versatile than this piece of clothing. White shirts come in different styles with different kinds of detailing, so you don’t have to settle for a simple office wear white shirt. However if a simple office wear white shirt is what you have, you can go crazy with different ways of styling it.

Linen Pants and Shorts

White linen pants for women stand the test of time as much as a LBD. Linen is known for its breathability and comfort. And white is the colour of summers. White linen pants and shorts not only look super smart but also make you look summery and fresh. So if you need to go out for shopping or lunch on an unbearably hot day (yes happens to all of us) this is your best bet. You can also go for linen tunics, dresses and kurtis for a relaxed and easy look.

Floral Prints

Good news for the bohemian and the romantic in you. Floral prints are back in a big way this season. Alexander Berardi, Nanette Lepore, Chanel, D&G and Loewe have shown us how to rock this trend this season. From big bold flowers to tiny little ones, you have a wide variety to choose from.

Strap Wedges

These are super comfortable, even if you have to spend days in them. These are universally flattering to women of all heights and structures. These come in various heel lengths. They are the most versatile types of heels. They are the summer shoes for all spring summer collections. Do you need more reasons to wear them? Pick up flirty embellished versions for day look or simple subtle types for work or candy coloured ones to pep up your LBDs.

Nudes

No, nude doesn’t mean boring. And no, nude doesn’t mean only nude pumps. If worn correctly nudes can be sexy and elegant or casual and feminine. Although picking up nude pieces can be a little tricky, (you need to know what nude would look nice with your skin complexion and hair colour) they are almost always very very versatile. Fleshy shades of nude pinks, palest tans and peach are my favourite shades for nude. From flowy dresses to cute tops, from simple trousers to bold lingerie inspired separates, from lace to sheer, nudes look especially chic in summers.

Brights

Yes bright coloured clothes are always cool for summers. But this year it is more of pastel brights and not neons. These fruity, happy and peppy colours are bound to make you stand out in a crowd. Bold pieces with neutrals such as white, black and beige are fine, but if you are at it, you might as well chuck safety and go in for bold combinations of bright colours.

Maxi Dresses

Four words- maximum comfort and extreme femininity. A maxi dress is an epitome of effortless sophistication and elegance. You cannot look more summery than this. Put on a maxi dress and you will feel as glamorous as a super model. Breezy, colourful, floral maxi dresses have made a big comeback this season.

Flared pants

The comeback of the seventies silhouettes is undeniable. Among other things, seventies flared pants have made a huge return. This spells nothing but good news for Indian women as they are known to be pear shaped. How flared you want your pants to be depends on where will you be wearing them. For work you can opt for slightly paired pants and team them with nice strappy wedges. Experimental women can go more ‘flared’ for a casual look.

Sunglasses

With a range of stylish choices for a pair of sunglasses from all kinds of brands, don’t let the summer sun bother your eyes. They dont just protect your eyes and the sensitive skin under the eyes, but they also take your look to another level. Choose from a wide range of sunglasses that suit the shape of your face and your budget. This is an absolute must have for summers.

Denims

Last but not the least, its the most essential fabric in any closet and we cant get enough of it! Elie Tahari, Derek Lam, Just Cavalli, Moschino, Dries Van Noten, D&G, Stella McCartney, Rebecca Taylor show us that denims doesn’t mean only jeans. The humble pair of jeans, however, is the most preferred way of wearing denims. Denims reinvents itself season after season to bring you myriad of colours and styles. Denim skirts, jackets or the head-to-toe denim looks are eternal.

Top 5 Bollywood Movies for Fashion Inspiration

It is often said that movies reflects life and vice-versa. Perhaps that is why you can watch some movies again and again only to seek inspiration for your wardrobe. Following are five such recent Hindi movies. I haven’t seen a lot of old ones so I really can’t comment on them but these recent few are hard to miss.

1. High end fashion- Aisha

aisha+movie Top 5 Bollywood Movies for Fashion Inspiration
Yes I know the movie is horrible. It’s irritating how the movie butchers the beauty of Jane Austen’s best female character, Emma. The only genuine counsel “Aisha” is able to impart to her friends and the viewers is that of high end fashion. The movie is full of inspiration if vintage high end is your style. I love her clothes (styled by Pernia Qureshi), I love her hair and makeup, I love her “Knightley” and I can even tolerate the product placements by L’oreal but I hate the movie.

2. Indian chic- Jab We Met

Kareena plays Geet in Jab We Met and her style is resembles a typical college student in Delhi/Punjab (Mumbai not so much!). She looks fab in her fulkari duppattas, tshirts and patialas, red nail paint and bunch of silver bangles. The look is girly but effortless and very wearable.

3. Sexy traditional Indian- Band Baaja Baaraat

Shruti Kakkar, played by Anushka Sharma in Band Baaja Baarat is a fresh graduate student who starts her business of wedding planning after college. While in college she is spotted in tshirts and short kurtis, she soon switches to subtle yet typically ‘West Delhi-ish, Punjabi’ suits. Each and every suit in her wardrobe is worth drooling, be it the green silk suit or the electric blue suit in the song ‘lut gaya’ or the gorgeous saree in the last scene.

4. Sexy chic- Kambakht Ishq

Kareena Kapoor’s look in Kambakht Ishq is aid to be inspired from the character of Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City. She plays a supermodel in the film and is spotted wearing CK, Dior and other designer labels. The look is definitely high end yet modern and wearable.

5. Traditional Indian- Devdas

devdas+movie Top 5 Bollywood Movies for Fashion Inspiration
Makers of Devdas went all out for the costumes of the film. Aishwarya rai has never looked more beautiful than her character in this film. The style is elaborate traditional Bengali. The jewellery and other accessories are given as much importance as the garments. The detailing of each and every look is hard to miss. You can happily mute the movie and just enjoy it visually.
These were the top five in my head. Which film inspires you? Drop in a comment below and share with us!

ARBAAZ KHAN WANTS THE DABANGG FRANCHISE ALL TO HIMSELF

I don’t really understand what the big deal is. Yes, the Salman Khan flick made millions in the box office and spawned a recent Bollywood hit, “Munni Badnaam Hui,” but can Dabangg really become a long-lasting franchise?

Meet Dabangg 2's new director -- Salman's little bro! Photo: Yogen Shah/Getty
How times can Salman Khan shake his tight police officer booty? Apparently, the answer is many. Bollywood execs have been fighting over the the cast and crew for Dabangg 2 (only a few months after the original released!), and recently decided to boot former director Abhinav Kashyap only to replace him with Salman’s kid producer/actor brother, Arbaaz Khan (who just so happened to play Salman’s spoiled little bro in the film).
So what’s the reason behind all the crew reshuffling?
As expected in Bollywood, mum’s the word. But what we do know is that Arbaaz is making quite some awaaz about his new title. He Tweeted last week:
Hey guys it true , I will be directing the sequel of Dabangg. Abhinav for some personal n professional reasons opted out. Inshallah Dabangg 2 will live up to all the expectations and be a huge blockbuster because of you all. God bless .Allah hafiz. Dabangg ho !
Hmm….”personal n professional reasons,” eh? I wonder if that includes nepotism.

'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2' Trailer: An Epic Ending

Whoa, it's Harry Potter and the End of Our Childhood. Seriously, I challenge you to watch the new trailer for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and not get chills. Go on, I dare you.
The franchise, which has played out in theaters over the course of a solid decade, will finally come to an end this summer when "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" opens on July 15. This is the moment that the last 10 years of stalking Fandango for tickets and getting in line (in costume!) at 4 p.m. for the midnight showing were all leading up to. Not that, you know, we actually did any of those things... But if we had, this trailer would have completely validated all prior nerdiness.
In a word, it's epic—from the opening seconds, which play the all-too-familiar theme in broken, slow beats to the intense Harry and Voldemort battle scenes. Fair warning for those who have read the book, however: We get to hear Harry's famous, "I never wanted any of you to die for me" line. And be prepared for some major heart-wrenching from that moment forward whenever you see a character you know isn't going to survive the Battle of Hogwarts.
Here are some spoiler-free moments highlighted in the trailer that really slap you in the face and say, "Hey! This is the end of Harry Potter!"
Hemione throwing her arms around Harry in tears: For seven movies now, it's been Harry, Ron and Hermione as pretty much HarryRonandHermione: one unit, up against all odds together. But this moment reminds us that, as much as Ron and Hermione want to be there for Harry, when it comes to Voldemort showdowns, Harry is a one-man show. And this time, it's a showdown of the "only one can live" variety. We'd be crying too, Hermione.
Hogwarts engulfed in flames: Holy crap. It's like when Warner Brothers released the "Deathly Hallows" poster with Hogwarts burning but only about 50 times more gut wrenching. Hogwarts has always been the beacon of stability in Harry's life. It was the one place that was safe from You Know Who, and burning it is the ultimate metaphor for nothing being what you thought anymore. Deep, right? But seriously, it's Hogwarts and it's on fire. Try not to cry.
Harry pulling Voldemort off the ledge: Of course the wizard duels—with the flashy wand energy crackling and Harry looking exhausted, but like he just can't give up—are great. They're exciting and bring the magic of the books to life, but this moment between Voldemort and Harry is so...personal. It's Harry bringing the battle to Voldemort and flexing that innate bravery that got him into Gryffindor in the first place.
Will "Deathly Hallows: Part 2" do justice to the book? How do you feel about the end of "Harry Potter?" Tell us in the comments and on Twitter!

Scale of Prints

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while now, you know my aversion to prints.  I prefer simple, classic shapes and bold colors with nary a print in sight unless by way of an accessory or two.  That being said, I can sometimes be cajoled into wearing a smaller print, which is what I’d recommend for Lara instead of the large, busy dress she has on.  What about you?  Are you a prints or solid girl?

Lady in Red

The lady in red, normally has questionable sartorial sense, but in this instance, Amisha’s looking prettier than we’ve seen.

Sweetly Passe

On anyone else, this suit would have looked a bit dated and passe, but Preity pulls it off and comes off looking sweet.  Surprisingly enough, this simple churidar is a Manish Malhotra!

Jump for Jumpsuits

I’m not one for jumpsuits but must say that Lara is looking cute in this particular one.  With silver heels and accessories, this is a perfect choice for a low-key promotional event.

Gown Faux-Pas

When wearing a gown, either stick with no accessories to let the gown shine through and if daring enough, don’t wear a silly bandeau top underneath.  While Mallika made the mistake of pairing an unnecessary necklace with a pretty gown, Raveena really fell short by ruining a somewhat ok gown with a bandeau bra underneath.

No Words

No words to describe this terrible fashion faux-pas.  So silence speaks for itself.

Karishma on L’Officiel

With such an edgy Roberto Cavalli dress, one would think the styling and cover would be edgy also. Alas, such is not the case.  This L’Officiel cover brings back much deja vu but worse than that, it’s boring and lackluster.  Why, oh why did they use the same male-models type look, those silly Karishma posters, and add in unnecessary accessories to an already embellished dress?
